Leggings have been around for some time now, so are you wondering If they’re still in style?
Officially, leggings were first popularized in the early 80’s, as a workout wear staple. At that time, though, they were only ever worn in a gym or aerobics class setting. It wasn’t until the late 80’s when they really came into fashion, as more of an actual clothing item. During that time bright neon colors were all the rage, so it was more than common to observe people wearing insanely colored leggings out in public. Once the neon colors of the 80’s went out of fashion, it seems so did the legging. It wasn’t until the 2000’s when the trend once again emerged. When that happened a lot of people thought the trend was fleeting and would simply go away. But it only gained momentum and is now stronger than ever!
The answer is yes.
Leggings are not only still in style, but they are hotter than ever. The reason behind their popularity can be explained in their versatility. Not only are they insanely comfortable, but they pretty much go with anything and everything.
I’m actually wearing my favorite pair of black leggings right now, as I’m typing this. The ones I’m wearing are thermal fleece leggings, which are thicker and warmer for the winter (it’s cold wear I live, especially today).
They are so insanely comfortable, which has made them pretty much my “travel pants;” the only pants I would ever wear on a plane (granted, I have 4 pairs I love them that much). The worst is travelling in a pair of pants that cut into your gut (yuk!).
The popularity of leggings has actually increased even more in the past year.
It’s due to the likes of society’s new “it girl’s,” Gigi and Kendall who’ve been photographed wearing their leggings as pants, which is a controversial question in of itself, is it okay to wear leggings as pants?
So now that you know leggings are still on trend and hotter than ever, are you wondering what to look for when buying a pair?
What to consider when buying a pair of leggings…
If you’re in the market for a pair, you really need to keep comfort, fit and color in mind.
Rule #1 – High Waist
What do I mean by this? Firstly, definitely look for a pair that features a higher waist. This will keep everything “tucked in” and will help prevent any chance of “muffin top” or “roll overs.” Trust me, it doesn’t matter what size you are, if you wear a pair that cut into you at the wrong spot, you’re going to feel and look really uncomfortable. Remember what I said above about travelling in a leggings that cut into your gut? It truly is a horrible feeling.
Rule #2 – Wide Waist Band
Just as much as the rise matters for comfort and fit, so does the width of the waist band. A wider elastic is going to have more of a gradual smoothing effect on your mid-section, as compared to a skinny band, which is going to just cut into your mid-section. Trust me on this one…a band that is more broad will be your new best friend.
Rule #3 – High Quality Material
Paying attention to the caliber of the fabric is absolutely huge! Buying and thereby wearing a pair of leggings that are made out of a thin, low grade, see through fabric is the exact reason so many women are so afraid of this trend.
Leggings should not be a substitute for tights, if they’re being worn as pants, so ensure you source some that feature a slightly thicker fabric, that are not transparent and offer full coverage.
Rule #4 – Darker Colors
Let’s face it, for the most part, women try and dress to emphasize certain body areas and then take steps to minimize others. So, if you’re going for a more slimming effect, when it comes to your leg (especially thigh) area, I would recommend opting for leggings that are either black or, at the very least, a darker color.
